M-League 2023-24 Finals: Games #15-16 and the Awards Ceremony

After the games were done, viewers given a preview of what is in store in the offseason, including some of the M-League original documentaries. It was just a short wait while they got things ready at the Bellesalle Shiodome.

MC Hayashi Misaki

The MC for the night was Hayashi Misaki, an announcer for TV Asahi. After introducing herself, we went straight to the individual awards. Handing them out is M-League Chairman Fujita Susumu.

4th Place Avoidance Award winner: Date Arisa (伊達朱里紗)

First, they awarded the 4th Place Avoidance Award, the award given to the player with the best 4th place avoidance rate in the regular season. In reverse order, they named the top three:

When Date’s name was called she went onto the stage smiling, waving and posing for the cameras. After Fujita-chairman put the medal around her neck, she gave a short speech. She talked about how this is her third individual award, but she’s will wants to win the plate. When her speech was finished, she walked down the aisle, high-fiving fans as she went along.


Highest Hanchan Score Award winner: Suzuki Taro (鈴木たろう)

The next award was the Highest Hanchan Score Award, awarded to the player who had the highest score in a single hanchan.

Beating the M-League record by 100, Taro went onto the stage and was awarded her medal. In Taro’s speech, he said that he will be aiming for the little plate medal, the MVP award, next season. As he walk off the stage, he showed off his medal to fans on all sides.

Finally, we have the MVP Award, the award given to the player that had the highest total score in the season.

All smiles, Yu went up onto the stage and was given the medal, a mini replica of the M-League championship plate. In his speech, he mentioned how he had to fight his own teammates to become MVP and remembers the M-League record-breaking 5 wins in a row that he did during the season. He also mentioned that he will be going for the MVP award for a second season in a row.


Final Standings

After the individual awards were given, each of the teams, in reverse order, came up onto the stage and one player gave a speech for the team.

In 9th place, with a score of -625.1pts during the regular season, are the Sega Sammy Phoenix. First, she congratulated the U-Next Pirates on winning the championship. With some tears, thanked the fans for their support.

In 8th place, with a score of -484.5pts during the regular season, is Team Raiden. In true Hagiwara fashion, Hagiwara acted like he wasn’t expecting that he was going to be the one speaking. He thanked everyone for this season in his speech.

In 7th place, with a score of -378.7pts during the regular season, are the Beast Japanext. During his speech, he humourously stumbled on some lines, perhaps because he unexpectedly had to make the speech.

In 6th place, with a score of +46.9pts during the regular season and -279.0pts in the semifinals, is the Konami Mahjong Fight Club. In a fun game of rock-paper-scissors, Hisato was chosen to be the one to give the speech.

In 5th place, with a score of -22.1pts during the regular season and -162.7pts in the semifinals, are the Shibuya Abemas. In Ooi’s speech, he congratulated the Pirates. After that, he jokingly said that he won’t be able to do better than Sarukawa’s speech. He told fans that he won’t be going anywhere and that the four of them will work hard next season.

In 4th place, with a score of -16.6pts during the regular season, +512.2pts in the semifinals and -104.3pts in the finals, are the EX Furinkazan. In a twist that the fans didn’t expect, Rumi was chosen to give the speech. She told everyone that getting 4th place is frustrating and that they will work together as four next season.

In 3rd place and winning a 1 million yen prize, with a score of +247.2pts during the regular season, +86.8pts in the semifinals and -42.1pts in the finals, are the Kadokawa Sakura Knights. Team captain said in his speech that that the team will lift the plate again next season.

In 2nd place and winning a 2 million yen prize, with a score of +345.3pts during the regular season, +37.8pts in the semifinals and +184.3pts in the finals, are the Akasaka Drivens. In a surprisingly short 49 second speech, he mentioned how the 2nd place was a bit frustrating, but they will be trying for their second championship next year and will bring smiles to their Drivlers.

One final team remained. As the room was bathed in blue light, the U-Next Pirates walked down the aisle and waved at the fans. The U-Next Pirates finished the season in 1st place and the M-League 2023-24 Champions. They finished with a score of +887.6pts in the regular season, +549.2pts in the semifinals and +555.1pts in the finals.

With the team on the stage, Fujita-chairman carried the plate to the stage, raised the plate and handed it off the captain of the team, Kobayashi Go.

Confetti was launched as Kobayashi and the chairman held the plate, posing for the cameras.

Afterwards, Mizuhara accepted for the team the 50 million yen cheque for their championship win.

After the photo shoot with the entire team, each player got to say a short speech. All of the players thank people who supported them along the way, including their family, their teammates and their fans. A few tears of joy were shed as well.

When they were done with the speeches, they raised the plate as one.

After the pictures, the four of them stepped aside and Fujita-chairman gave one more speech. He congratulated the U-Next Pirates on their win and reminisced about the past 6 season of M-League. At the end of his speech, he officially closed the M-League 2023-24 Season.

After one more drop of confetti and some final shots of the players, the credits rolled, marking the end of the M-League 2023-24 season.
